Atlas Orthogonal Upper Cervical Chiropractic Technique is a gentle and specific method for adjusting the most complex joint region in the body: The Cranio-cervical junction (CCJ). The CCJ is a collective term that refers to the occiput (base of skull), atlas (1st cervical vertebrae), axis (second cervical vertebrae) and supporting muscles and ligaments. It is a transitional area between the mobile head and relatively rigid spinal column. The brainstem, spinal cord, and vertebral arteries pass through the CCJ making it both the neurologic switch and the primary pathway for the exchange of fluids between the brain and body. The key vertebrae in the CCJ is the atlas or 1st cervical vertebrae. When the atlas becomes misaligned it can increase tension on the spinal cord, spinal nerves, muscles, ligaments, veins and arteries in the CCJ and can disrupt the proper function of the nerve, muscular, vestibular, vascular, and cerebral spinal fluid systems. The CCJ is a vunerable region and merits special consideration for care and treatment. Dr. Kohler pays special attention to the CCJ and offers gentle and effective treatment to restore integrity to one of the body’s most vital areas.
For over 40 years, millions of people have benefited from the Atlas Orthogonal spinal adjustment and it has become highly regarded among Neurologists, Medical Doctors, TMJ specialists, and the general public as a safe, gentle, and effective method to restore proper Atlas alignment, reduce pain, and improve general health and well-being.
Dr. Kohler utilizes the iCR3600 Digital Radiography System and Opal 20/20 Spinal Analysis software to process and analyze the digital images. The specific Atlas Orthogonal Images are analyzed to determine each person’s unique misalignment and formula for correction thereby allowing for a very gentle and precise atlas correction. The atlas correction is made using the Sweat Atlas Orthogonal Adjusting Instrument: a high-tech percussion adjusting instrument developed Dr. Roy Sweat and engineers at Georgia Tech University in the early 70’s. The instrument delivers a very gentle percussive force and involves no popping or cracking of the neck. People often feel an immediate sense of well being and relaxation afterward. Over the course of several days to weeks, many people experience significant resolution of their pain and symptoms.
